Pen and paper drawings don’t often take on realism or scale on the level of Australian artist CJ Hendry. Hendry’s especially large black and white drawings are executed with an elegant simplicity of process. With a simple pen in hand she renders everyday objects – shoes, clothing, hats – with photographic detail. Hendry’s drawings are so detailed, they even seem to nearly capture imperfections in the photographs of her source material. Perhaps as intriguing as her finished pieces, though, are images of the work in progress. Precise lines and fine gradients contrast with rough guide lines and the hours of work yet to be done.
