Ethereal Landscapes
These blazing, ethereal scenes by photographer Barry Underwood are certainly not your typical countrysides. In each composition, the Ohio-based artist explores the effects of artificial lightweight put inside natural settings. Through this intervention, the images evoke a sense of an eerie occurrence that appears out of place within an otherwise familiar setting.
The artist states his curiousness about the annals of built-up and country sites drives his work. He researches selected locations before venturing out to image them. Upon appearance, he builds his site-specific groups using commanded lights and luminescent material, and then experiments with creative photographic consequences to capture the essence of each location.
With cinematic flair, the images blend the real with the surreal. The serene scenes are just slightly interrupted by the unusual patterns of light that dance across the lakes and trees. Underwood states, "By disclosing the beauty and promise of an commonplace landscape an everyday scene is transformed into a memorable, visual experience."
