Graceful Ballerinas Fall Into Mystical Daydreams

Ballerina is a task by Toronto-based photographer Vanessa Paxton. According to the artist, the sequence is a "photographic investigation into the simultaneous flexibility and solitude of the dancer." Her goal was to create images that feature a tempo of falling into sleep or rousing up from a illusion, the feelings of twilight consciousness where nothing precisely makes sense.
The bright white of the costumes set against the stark very dark background evokes a lightweight and airy feel in which each person who dances seems to be bobbing in a huge space of nothing. The indefinite setting gives no context to the scenes, permitting viewers to create all types of narratives about the dancer and her article, while the light sprinkle of dirt that reveals itself in the lone spotlight lures us away from a solid truth into a whimsical daydream. Paxton's Ballerinas are reminiscent of an Alice in Wonderland journey, where a juvenile girl navigates large adventures through a mysterious land.
